In November 2010, the Institute of World Policy, with the support of the Embassy of Georgia in Ukraine, launched a thematic panel “Ukraine and Georgia.” IWP wanted to support liberal reforms in Georgia and strengthen Ukrainian-Georgian relations on political and personal level.As part of the project, a public discussion among Georgian speakers for Ukrainian experts, diplomats and government officials, a video conference Kyiv-Tbilisi, a Media Club with the participation of Georgian speakers, an exhibition and Cinema Clubs were organized.

A special panel called “Ukraine-Georgia” took place on 11th of November at the ISP. At its beginning a public discussion was held with Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Giorgi Baramidze. On November 23, 2010, IWP presented the photo project “Georgia 2000 vs. Georgia 2010 “in Kiev. The genuine photo project allowed to reveal how the reality has changed for a decade and to feel the call of the Caucasus.

Most of the photos are from the same areas, places, buildings divided only by the years of violent changes. The reforms have coined a new face of Georgia and instilled faith and pride into the hearts of Georgians. Famous Georgian photographers, including Yuri Mechetov, Gog Chanadiri, Irakli Dzneladze, Amiko Kavtaradze, Dinara Oґanova, Beso Gulashvili, Levan Chhatarashvili and others, took pictures.

The grand opening of the exhibition was held with the participation of the President of Ukraine (2005-2010) Viktor Yushchenko, President of Lithuania (1998-2003, 2004-2009) Valdas Adamkus, Ambassador of Georgia to Ukraine Grigol Katamadze and United States Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft. It took place in the exhibition hall “Khlibnya” in Saint Sophia Cathedral. The visitors had the wonderful opportunity to experience the unique authentic Gerorgian atmosphere, as the exhibition was complemented by a performance by folk dance groups and exquisite national dishes.

In 2011, this exhibition was displayed in six cities of Ukraine. In particular the citizens of Lviv, Odessa, Yalta, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Donetsk could enjoy these photos. Among the first visitors were representatives of local governments and local authorities, representatives of business circles of the region, artists, writers, public figures and journalists.

Videoconferences
During the video conference, which took place on December 20, the Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia- Giorgi Bokeria revealed details on the prospects of cooperation between Ukraine and Georgia and reforms in Georgia. On May 24, 2011 a videoconference Kyiv-Tbilisi named “20 years of independence: is it enough to build a European state” was held, where Kakha Bendukizde conversed with Ukrainian experts, journalists and students. He is a former Minister of Economy of Georgia, the founder of the Free University of Tbilisi and Gia Nodia, Professor, Director of the International School of Caucasus studies, State University of Elias.

The results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia were the topic of a conversation during the video conference between the Ukrainian and Georgian experts on October 3, 2012. From the studion in Tbilisi Mr. Batu Kutelia, Deputy Secretary of the National Security Council and Gela Vasadze, a journalist, an editor, and a presenter on the TV channel “PIC” took part in the discussions. During the debate, a considerable amount of attention was paid to the risks of repayment reforms. The experts raised concerns that the destruction of institutions that have performed exceptionally well during the reform process may affect the further development of Georgia.

Ukrainian experts discussed the peculiarities of Georgian reforms during a video conference with Larisa Burakova, Russian economist and author of the book “Why Georgia managed” on December 24, 2012. The full transcript of the talk is available here.

The project also foresaw several ISP Media Club and panel discussions. Among the participants were Vice-Prime Minister of Georgia and State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Georgi Baramidze, (First, the transcript and and second, Media Club with Mr. Baramidze) the chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia Giorgi Baramiya, Head of Lviv Regional Branch of All-Ukrainian public organization «George», the Deputy Chairman of the Georgian community “Aragvi” in Lviv region Dzhumber Dzihua.
Cinema Club
To understand Georgia better and deeply, Institute of World Politics turned to the language of cinema. In the framework of the panel «Ukraine-Georgia», an operational Cinema Club started its activity, during which Ukrainian viewers could acquaint themselves with the best examples of Georgian cinematography.

The Cinema Club began by а screening of the famous Georgian film “Pirosmani” (1969, directed by George Shengelaya). The film won several prestigious film awards, including the prize for best biographical film at the International Film Festival in Asolo 1974 and the Grand Prix “Golden Hugo”- International Film Festival in Chicago. Screenings of Georgian films in an informal atmosphere has become a good tradition of IWP.
