The Institute of World Policy held a media club with Nikoloz Vashakidze, First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia. The high-rank diplomat discussed with Ukrainian journalists a range of issues within Georgian-Ukrainian relations as well as international position of Georgia.
Ambassador Vashakidze stressed that a fruitful cooperation between the two countries stays on, particularly on the highest level, regardless of the administration change in Ukraine. The positive experience of either country shall be applied where the other one is still lagging; that is how the Georgian dignitary sees the cooperation of the twain when it comes to their European integration.
Albeit Germany is still obstinately reluctant to advance towards NATO Membership Action Plan for Georgia, Ambassador Vashakidze is optimistic about the overall prospects at the forthcoming Alliance summit in Chicago, thanks to the ardent support from the US and Eastern European member states.
The Georgian official also shared his views on the situation in a breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia. “On this stage, Russia’s engagement there pursuits the sole objective, to secure the most comfortable setup for the most comfortable loot splitting. It is just easier with the incumbent figures now where everything has been made clear long ago, and they are too lazy to build the corrupted schemes anew, with the new leaders.”
Ambassador Vashakidze also commented on the possibility of the merger of South and North Ossetia as a possible outcome of the political crisis in the former by emphasizing that it will never be recognized by either the international community or Georgia itself, and will only worsen the situation. The diplomat however did not reject it as a hypothetic option for Russia’s policy.
The First Deputy Minister also compared Vladimir Putin’s efforts on the Eurasian Union to the reestablishment of the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union.
