Strategic Discussion Club in Kherson

Institute of World Policy held a meeting of Strategic Discussion Club in Kherson on April 16. The topic of the meeting: “The EU, NATO…What will Ensure Ukraine’s Security?”The event was organized within the project “Strategic Discussion Club in the Regions”, supported by the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.

Being aware of the challenges facing Ukraine today, IWP have decided to hold regular public discussions on the strategic vision of Ukraine’s national security policy in eastern and southern regions of the country. The key objective of the project is to involve regional elites who for a long time have been in intellectual isolation to participate in the debate on strategic development of country.

On April 16, IWP invited European diplomats and leading Ukrainian experts to Kherson to discuss security issues with regional experts, civil activists, representatives of local authorities, and journalists. The Strategic Discussion Club in Kherson was attended by Marius Yanukonis, Ambassador of Lithuania to Ukraine, Pavel Buchek, Deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ukraine, Richard Scarborough, Counsellor at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine, Oleksiy Haran, Scientific Director of the School of Political Analysis at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, and Sergiy Solodkyy, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Policy.

Public Debates «Georgian Experience for Ukraine»

Institute of World Policy together with Caucasian House held public debates within the initiative «Georgian Experience for Ukraine» on April 15th.The first panel «Strategies on Occupied Territories: Isolation or Engagement?»

Participants discussed Ukraine’s policy towards occupied territories in the context of Georgian experience; in particularly, they defined the main challenges and problems in engagement with people of Donbass and Crimea and formulated recommendations to the government on how to overcome them. During the debates the policy brief «Strategies of Ukraine for Building Relations with Population of Occupied Territories and Georgian Experience» has been presented.

The second panel “Reforms in Ukraine: How to Avoid Georgian Mistakes”
The panel was focused on the first results of reforms in Ukraine and lessons learnt from Georgian experience. The participants presented the policy brief «Economic Reforms: Market Liberalization vs Social Responsibility (Georgian Experience)».

The Eastern Partnership in 2014: Turning Point for Some, Insecurity for All

Leonid Litra, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of World Policy, participated in a CSF EAP forum’s panel event “The Eastern Partnership in 2014: turning point for some, insecurity for all”, held in the premises of the Open Society Foundation in Brussels.The focal point of the event was the presentation of the new edition of The European Integration Index for Eastern Partnership Countries 2014 (EaP Index 2014). The 2014 Index generates recommendations to guide countries along the reform process and serves as a monitoring tool for both civil society and policymakers in the partner countries and the EU.

The highly attended event kicked off with the welcoming speech by Natalia Yerashevich, Director of the Secretariat of the Steering Committee of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum. The list of speakers included Arnoldas Pranckevicius, Adviser to the President of the European Parliament, and Jeff Lovitt, Director of Policy Association of Open Society (PASOS).

Experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine gave an overview of the performance of the relevant countries.

Leonid Litra made a strong call for the EU not to be indulgent regarding EaP countries’ progress towards European integration. “Reforms should be undertook and well implemented and the EU should be very critical in its assessments” said the expert.

IWP Presented TOP-10 Most Effective Ukrainian and Foreign Ambassadors

On March 19 Institute of World Policy named TOP-10 Ukrainian Ambassadors Abroad and TOP-10 Foreign Ambassadors in Ukraine 2014. The rating is based on the results of expert survey.The official presentation included a ceremony of awarding the winners with diplomas. IWP awarded the Ambassador of Austrian to Ukraine Wolf Dietrich Heim and Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski. The last one was recognized as the most effective foreign ambassador in Ukraine for the second time.
