IWP held a videoconference with Carnegie Endowment

Institute of World Policy held a videoconference “The U.S.-Ukraine Strategic Partnership: Defining the Challenges and Proposing Solutions” with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (Washington).The event took place within the framework of the eponymous two-day conference, organized by
Carnegie Endowment in Washington, in which well-known American and Ukrainian politicians, experts and civic leaders took part.

Participants discussed the current situation in Ukraine, and problems of the economic transformations and democratic development in particular. Much attention was paid to issue of the freedoms of speech and press in Ukraine, increasing political pressure on media. Speakers could not ignore the challenges confronted by the Ukrainian civil society, focusing on mechanisms of cooperation between state bodies and civic organizations.

Panel discussions were dedicated to current situation and perspectives of the U.S. – Ukraine cooperation, in the economic, political, security and humanitarian fields. Some points were made concerning European integration of Ukraine.

In Kyiv discussion involved People’s Deputies, experts, diplomats. Mykhailo Poherbinsky, Volodymyr Aryev, Ksenia Liapina, Yurii Pavlenko, Andriy Shkil, Ihor Huzhva, Olexiy Haran, Oleksandr Lytvynenko were among them.

H. E. Hans-Jurgen Heimsoeth, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine, Eric Shultz, Deputy Head of the Mission of the U.S. Embassy to Ukraine and representatives of the other foreign diplomatic missions in Ukraine also took part in the discussion.

The videoconference was held before the Third meeting of the Ukraine-U.S. Commission on the Strategic Partnership, which is scheduled to take place on February 15th, 2011 and will be conducted at the level of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kostiantyn Hryshchenko and the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
