Ukraine’s Foreign Policy Audit

The Institute of World Policy has launched a large-scale analytical project Ukraine’s Foreign Policy Audit.The objective of this project is to explore mutual interests of Ukraine and a number of strategically important states in order to develop recommendations for proactive foreign policy of Ukraine and become involved into development of revised foreign policy strategy for Ukraine.

The IWP is publishing an analysis of Ukraine’s relations with certain state on monthly basis. The project covers Ukraine’s neighbors, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Russia, Turkey, the Black Sea countries, Georgia and Turkey, and the states that have a key role in Ukraine’s foreign policy: the US, Germany, France, Italy and Austria.

Ukraine-Germany
The first presented study was dedicated to Ukrainian-German relations. The IWP’s recommendations on strengthening the cooperation between the two countries was presented on February 9 at the public debates titled “Ukraine-Germany. How to Turn Situational Partnership into Priority One.” The event was attended by Ukrainian and German experts, diplomats, and representatives of business and civil society.

Ukraine-U.S.

On March 29, the Institute of World Policy held a public debate “The USA for UKRAINE: Partner, Patron or Ally?” where presented the research “Foreign Policy Audit: Ukraine-U.S.” Vadym PRYSTAYKO, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Geoffrey R. PYATT, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, and Andy HUNDER, President, American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, presented their remarks on the US-Ukraine relations.

Ukraine – Turkey

On April 13, the Institute of World Policy held a public discussion “Ukraine-Turkey: New Black Sea Union?”.Maryna VOROTNYUK, invited fellow of the Institute of World Policy presented the discussion paper. Yönet C. TEZEL, Turkish Ambassador to Ukraine; Olga CHUBRYKOVA, author of the book “Turkey that We do not Know”, and Director of Protocol Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine; Yusuf KURKCHI, Head of Department of support of the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Crimean Tatars Affairs, presented their remarks on the Turkish-Ukrainian relations.

Ukraine-Hungary

On April 20, the Institute of World Policy held a public discussion “Ukraine-Hungary: Toward a Balanced Partnership” and presented a discussion paper “Foreign Policy Audit: Ukraine-Hungary”. The discussion paper was prepared by Ivan Medynskyi, research fellow at the IWP, and Bence Kapcsos, invited Hungarian expert. László Csaba Pap, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Hungary in Ukraine and Dmytro Tkach, Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary (1992-1997; 2006-2010) took part in the discussion.

Ukraine-Austria

On April 28 the Institute of World Policy presented a discussion paper “Foreign Policy Audit: Ukraine-Austria”. Daria Gaidai, research fellow at the IWP, Hermine Poppeller, Ambasador of Austria to Ukraine, Olexander Scherba, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Austria, and Vasyl Khymynets, Director of the First European Directorate Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, presented their remarks on the relations between Ukraine and Austria.

On June 8 the Institute of World Policy presented a discussion paper “Foreign Policy Audit: Ukraine-Belarus”.Valentin VELICHKO, Ambassador of Belarus to Ukraine, Roman BEZSMERTNYI, Ambassador of Ukraine to Belarus (2010-2011), Andrey SKRIBA, PhD, Research Fellow at the Research Center of the Institute of Privatization and Management (Minsk, Belarus), Yauheni PREIHERMAN, Head of the Minsk Dialogue Track-II Initiative, Chairman of Board of the Discussion and Analytical Society Liberal Club shared their opinions on the current Ukraine-Belarusian cooperation.
