Civil Society Forum “Ukraine – EU Summit 2011: the public dimension” took place in Ukraine

On December 19, 2011 within the framework of the Ukraine-EU Summit the Civil Society Forum “Ukraine – EU Summit 2011: the public dimension”, initiated by Ukrainian national platform of the EAP Civil Society Forum, took place in Ukraine. At the event the outcomes of the Ukraine-EU Summit were analyzed and discussed, as well as future prospects of the Ukraine’s European integration. Representatives of different NGOs, think-tanks, political leaders and European and Ukrainian bureaucrats took part in the Forum.European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy were the honored guests of the Forum.

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy stated in his welcome remarks that meeting the representatives of the civil society is key event in the agenda of visit to Kyiv. He emphasized that Ukraine is an “important strategic partner of the European Union”.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso also delivered a short speech, focusing on the results of the EU-Ukraine Summit.
The event was moderated by the director of the Institute of World Policy Alyona Getmanchuk, who mentions in her introductory remarks that the fact the EU-Ukraine Summit was conducted on the top level and that the joint statement was adopted should be considered to be a positive trend. However, Alyona Getmanchuk clarified, it is till unclear that Ukraine’s European choice and European vector of development are irreversible.
