Ukraine on the Eve of Vilnius: How to Make the Economy Work for National Security?

The Institute of World Policy held the fifth session of the Strategic Discussion Club on September 18th, 2013.Ukrainian and European experts and diplomats discussed the relationship between the economy and national security, the basis of economic security, and internal and external economic threats to Ukraine.

The Strategic Discussion Club aims to create opportunities to hold informal but substantial public discussions on the strategic matters of the national security of Ukraine on a regular basis. Meetings of the Strategic discussion club are usually initiated to cover some of the most important issues of the national security and are held once every two months. Well-known Ukrainian and foreign experts, politicians and diplomats are invited to participate in the club meetings.

The event wass held under the support of the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine and the Embassy of Norway in Ukraine.

The Institute of World Policy publishes policy briefs after each session of the Strategic Discussion Club.

Street Eurouniversity was organised in Kherson

Institute of World Policy with the support of the International Fund “Vidrodzennia” on September 13, 2013 organised Street Eurouniversity in Kherson – the exhibition of caricatures which illustrate benefits of European integration for Ukraine.The exhibition “There is a better side of Europe” was opened by a lecture given by Mårten Ehnberg, Deputy Head of the Embassy of Sweden in Kyiv. The Swedish diplomat told about economic and social relations between Sweden and Ukraine and signing the Association Agreement with the EU.

The citizens of Kherson had an opportunity to discuss their questions regarding European integration with the IWP experts – Alyona Getmanchuk, IWP Director, and Serhiy Solodkyy, IWP first deputy Director.

Street Eurouniversities have been already presented in: Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Poltava, Sumy, Konotop, Kirovohrad, Kryvyi Rih, and Mykolaiv. Caricatures presented within this project illustrate two realities in around twenty social, economic, and political spheres of everyday life in Ukraine and in the EU countries. Caricatures were made by famous Ukrainian artists – Maryna Turovska, Kostyantyn Kazanchev, Ihor Bezhuk and Oleksiy Kustovskyy. Pictures were ordered by the IWP.

Street Eurouniversity is a metaphorical title for public events, which aim is to support open discussion between civil society leaders and experts with ordinary citizens. Within this project we organise series of exhibitions of caricatures that illustrate the most vital challenges of Eurointegration supplemented by relevant comments and facts.

Institute of World Policy with the support of the International Fund “Vidrodzennia” on September 12, 2013 organised Street Eurouniversity in Mykolaiv – the exhibition of caricatures which illustrate the benefits of European integration for Ukraine.The exhibition “There is a better side of Europe” was opened by a lecture given by Jan Tombinski, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, and Mårten Ehnberg, Deputy Head of the Embassy of Sweden in Kyiv. The EU Ambassador highlighted that the Association Agreement is a very precise plan for the reforms that will allow Ukraine to become a modern and competitive state in which people would not like to leave. The Swedish diplomat, in his turn, stressed that Ukrainians should not be afraid of changes on the path of European integration.

Those who visited our exhibition had an opportunity to discuss their questions regarding European integration with the IWP experts – Alyona Getmanchuk, IWP Director, and Serhiy Solodkyy, IWP first deputy Director.

Within the project “There is a better side of Europe” the IWP has also launched an information campaign “Say YES! to education in the EU” (“Skazhy YES ocviti v ES”) aimed at informing young Ukrainians about the wide opportunities to study in the European universities within the Erasmus Mundus program. The exhibition illustrates opportunities to study abroad.

Furthermore, Jan Tombinski presented a new information campaign “Building Europe in Ukraine” launched by the EU Delegation in Ukraine with the aim to inform the Ukrainian citizens about benefits of economic and political integration with the EU and also to raise their awareness of the issue. The citizens of Mykolaiv saw a street theater performance about the major challenges of Ukraine’s integration with the European Community

Say YES! to education in the EU

Institute of World Policy has launched a new project within an information campaign „Stronger Together” aimed at presenting benefits of European integration.In comparison to the students from other European countries and Turkey, Ukrainians still do not use the opportunities to study in the EU. Since 2004 to 2013 just 329 students studied at European universities with the support of Erasmus Mundus program. While more than 50 thousand Turkish students obtained higher education in the EU in the period of 2000-2012.

Institute of World Policy starts an information campaign entitled “Skazhy YES! osviti v ES” aimed at informing young Ukrainians about the wide opportunities to study in the European universities within the Erasmus Mundus program. Furthermore, an additional goal of the campaign is to persuade young people to defend their right to high-quality education. The project is organised with the support of the Czech government.

IWP joins the information campaign “Stronger Together”

A new information campaign entitled “Stronger Together” aimed at supporting European path of Ukraine has been launched on September, 10 in the Concert Hall of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.From the stage of the Hall about advantages of economic, political and cultural Eurointegration said: Jan Tombinski – Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Andriy Olefiov – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukriane, Hennadiy Chyzhkov – President of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tomas Fiala – President of the European Business Association, President of the European Youth Parliament – Ukraine, Sviatoslav Vakarchuk – Merited Artist of Ukraine, and Alyona Getmanchuk – Director of the Institute of World Policy.

Alyona Getmanchuk told about IWP experience in spreading information about the European Union in the different regions of Ukraine within the project “Street Eurouniversity”. She also shared her thoughts on the role of civil society in implementation of the Association Agreement in Ukraine.

The Director of IWP said: “Association with the EU is not only an incentive for active and aware mobilisation of part of Ukrainian citizens who support European integration, but also a great responsibility. Civil society representatives will have to upgrade their professional and analytical abilities and strengthen their team spirit, which will be crucial for comprehensive monitoring of implementation of the Association Agreement and for further spreading information about its advantages for Ukraine”.
During the event the IWP has presented the new components of its information campaign, which are movies and iconographic devoted to the advantages of European university programs currently unavailable for Ukrainian students “Skazhy YES! Ocviti v EC” (“Say YES! To education in the EU”). The project is organised due to the support of the Czech government.
The project “Stronger Together” includes a range of informing events in Ukraine’s regions aimed at informing the local population about the country’s European integration course.

In February 2013 the IWP has launched an information campaign “There is a better side of Europe!”. Within the project in particular cities of Ukraine the Institute organizes Street Eurouniversities during which IWP experts and diplomats of the EU member states discuss with Ukrainians about European integration. Street Eurouniversities were organised in more than 10 cities of Ukraine: Kyiv, Odesa, Dniptoperovsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Poltava, Kremenchuk, Nizhyn, Sumy, Konotop, Kryvyi Rih and Krivorohrad. Next events will be organised in Mykolaiv (12 September) and in Kherson (13 September. Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Jan Tombinski, will be the honorary guest during the event in Mykolaiv.

IWP presented Street Eurouniversity in Kryvyi Rih

Institute of World Policy with support of the International Fund “Vidrodzennia” organised on September, 6 Street Eurouniversity in Kryvyi Rih – the exhibition of caricatures which illustrate benefits of European integration for Ukraine.The exhibition “There is a better side of Europe” was opened by a lecture given by Oleksiy Haran, professor of National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”. Expert said that agreements on free trade areas with a few countries are normal practice in developed states. Furthermore Oleksiy Haran stressed that after signing of the Association Agreement Ukraine’s small and medium-sized business will adapt European law and principles faster.

Czech diplomat said that it is important to challenge societal apathy and prepare for further changes. Institute of World Policy with support of the International Fund “Vidrodzennia” organised on 22-23 August 2013 “Street Eurouniversity” in Poltava and Kremenchuk – the exhibition of caricatures which illustrate benefits of European integration for Ukraine.The exhibition “There is a better side of Europe” was opened by a lecture about European integration given by Maria Jurikova, deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine. Ms Jurikova explained advantages of European integration. Furthermore, Ms Jurikova emphasized that the Association Agreement will be the first step which will bring Ukraine closer to the EU. Finally, Ms Jurikova said that on September 21 will take place meeting of EU member states’ foreign ministers, who will decide whether the Agreement with Ukraine will be signed or not.

The Institute of World Policy, with support of the International Fund “Vidrodzhennia” ,on 15-16 August presented in Chernihiv and Nizhyn the exhibition “Street Eurouniversity” – a number of caricatures which illustrate benefits of European integration for Ukraine.The exhibition “There is a better side of Europe” was opened by Martin Day, Deputy Head of Mission of the British Embassy in Ukraine, with his lecture about European integration. British diplomat focused on advantages for Ukraine from integration. According to Martin Day, signing Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is crucial for further cooperation and integration. “We understand that this process cannot be immediate: as it is said – Moscow was not built at once – we have to be patient. We realise the Vilnius Summit and signing of the Association Agreement as the first step, not the last one, in Ukraine’s Eurointegration” – said British diplomat.
